A family were left without home heating after their oil tank was emptied by opportunist thieves in Newry over the weekend.
A warning has followed after the incident in the Barcroft area of the city.
Newry, Mourne & Down Sinn Féin Councillor Liz Kimmins is urging people to ensure that they secure their home heating oil tanks.
“Given the current price of oil this is proving to be attractive for criminal elements,” commented councillor Kimmins.
“I would urge people, especially those whose tanks are exposed to be vigilant, ensure that they lock their garden gates and secure the lids to their tanks with a pad lock or other such device.
“I have contacted the local PSNI and PCSP to raise this issue, however, it is mainly through vigilance, whether it be in your own home or keeping an eye towards your neighbours, that we can best deter this type of activity.”
