Woman’s body found at house in Newry – police treating death as suspicious

A woman’s body has been discovered in a house in Newry this evening (Friday).

Police and crime scene investigators are currently on the scene of the incident in the Damolly Meadows area of the city.

Sinn Fein Councillor Valerie Harte has liaised with police and said they are “treating the death as suspicious and are currently investigating the circumstances”.

“The thoughts of all with the family of the deceased,” she added.

SDLP MLA Justin McNulty commented: “Very sad to hear a female has been found deceased in suspicious circumstances in the Damolly area of Newry City.

“I have spoken to the police and they have explained there were vulnerabilities around the lady and they are therefore being particularly cautious around their approach.

“There are a few things that are not adding up and they are trying to piece things together. They will know more once the post mortem has been completed hopefully [on Saturday].

“My thoughts and prayers are with this sadly deceased woman and with her family and friends. The community around Damolly are a very close knit and neighbourly. This will come as a major shock to everyone.”

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police in Newry are investigating the sudden death of a woman in the Damolly Meadows area on Friday 13th November. A post mortem examination will be carried out in due course to determine the cause of death. There are no further details at present.”
