Community spirit is alive and kicking across Newtownhamilton with the local community centre having been transformed into a food parcel distribution centre.
This has happened in order to help meet the needs of people who have been impacted by coronavirus or confined to their homes as part of the government’s lockdown measures.
The centre is being used to organise deliveries and process food parcels for the local community.
Newtownhamilton Community Association in the space of two and half weeks delivered more than 300 food parcels to homes across Newtownhamilton and the surrounding area.
The Association, with the support of local Councillor Barra O’Muiri, has been working around the clock in conjunction with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s community hub scheme to make sure that nobody goes hungry.
The Association have also been successful in funding bids and are now able to reach out to people who have not received support from the council’s parcel scheme.
A spokesperson for Newtownhamilton Community Association said: “The feedback we are receiving from the community is amazing, whether it’s been about supplies people can’t get hold of or simply being available to provide reassurance.
“Many, many vulnerable people are isolated and extremely anxious, the team of volunteers are able to help alleviate their fears and help them feel less isolated.
“Members of the public are reminded that the Newtownhamilton Community Centre remains closed and that anyone who requests a food parcel will have it delivered to them directly.”
