One further Covid-19 death in NI as all sport set to resume in ROI at end of this month

There has been one further Covid-19 death in Northern Ireland over the past 24 hours, the Department of Health has confirmed.

It brings the Department’s total to 544, with Nisra earlier reporting their weekly figure having now passed 800.

The number of new cases over the past 24 hours has risen by three to 4,866.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Peter Weir says it’s vital that as many children as possible can be brought back to school.

“Unless we see children back in school, the maximum amount of time and hopefully reaching a point that we can see every child being in all the time, this is damaging to the educational future of young people, it’s damaging to society,” he said.

“So there’s a balance to be struck there and obviously everything has to be as healthy and as public health-orientated as possible, but there also has to be other considerations and balances as well.

Elsewhere in the Republic of Ireland, all sporting activity is set to restart at the end of this month.

According to RTE, plans going to cabinet today will see individual sporting organisations given the power to chose how to proceed from June 29.

Outdoor events will see crowds of 200 permitted from June 29 and this would increase to 500 from July 20.
