There have been calls for a united front in the continued battle for adequate healthcare in south Armagh.
Crossmaglen Community Centre was filled to capacity last night (Thursday) for a public meeting to address areas of concern.
There was a huge welcome for the news that Dr Pat Fee has designed to withdraw his resignation from the Rathkeeland Surgery, amid assurances that adequate cover will be sought to deal with the substantial caseload.
And Newry and Armagh MP Mickey Brady, speaking at the meeting, said everyone must stand together.
“I know there is the perception out there that politicians can’t get along but this is not a party political issue, it goes way beyond that,” he said.
“I will happily work with anyone from any party or group in order to secure the level of healthcare that this area needs and deserves.
“That is what we were elected for and we need to present a united front on this issue and stand together for the people of south Armagh.
“I want to take this opportunity to commend Dr Fee and his staff for their incredible efforts during what has been a very difficult period.
“What we are seeing here on the ground are the effects of the Tory assault on frontline public services and it is hard working, civic minded people like them who have done what they can to lessen the effects of those cuts on the community.
“Myself and a number of my party colleagues have had numerous meetings on the issue of Rathkeeland and healthcare in south Armagh in general.
“We’ve met with the Trust and the Board and have received assurances from both that they are exhausting all possibilities to secure a permanent solution, but this battle is by no means over.
“I understand that Dr Fee is meeting with a number of people next week and, if he wants to meet with me beforehand, or wants some of us to attend those meetings as well, then our door is always open.
“Whatever happens, we’ll stand with this community and fight for it to get the healthcare it deserves.”
