Permanent status for Bessbrook autism unit

Sinn Féin Councillor Dáire Hughes has said that Education Minister John O’Dowd’s support for the Learning Support Centre at St Joseph’s Primary School, Bessbrook demonstrates commitment to children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

Councillor Hughes said: “I am delighted that the pilot scheme which St Joseph’s had been operating has now been made permanent and I commend John O’Dowd on this decision.

“Children on the autistic spectrum need specialist education and it is wonderful that this is being provided in South Armagh.

“It is the duty of government to provide for the vulnerable within our community and I think that the Education Minister’s support for this unit shows that Sinn Féin is serious about enhancing the educational experience and outcomes for all pupils, particularly those facing additional challenges.”
