Police have confirmed that a 67-year-old man has died after tonight’s serious accident at Meigh.
He has been named as Patsy McCreesh, who was from the area.
Two vehicles, a silver Vauxhall Vectra and an articulated lorry, were involved in the accident, which happened at around 6.50pm.
The smash happened on the Forkhill Road in Meigh.
The road remains closed between Railway Road and Low Road following the crash.
Police, who have appealed for witnesses, have asked drivers to avoid the area and diversions have been put in place.
Newry and Armagh Sinn Fein MP Conor Murphy said: “I share the shock of the local community here on learning of the tragic passing of Patsy McCreesh, who was a brother of Hunger Striker Raymond McCreesh.
“The McCreesh family are held in the highest esteem in Camlough, in South Armagh and across Ireland and I am very saddened that such heartbreak should visit this family.
“I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to Patsy’s brothers and sisters and to his entire circle of family and friends. I know that the community of South Armagh will come together to offer their support at this time.”
Newry and Armagh SDLP Assemblyman Dominic Bradley also expressed his shock and sadness.
“I am shocked and saddened by the news that another person has lost their life on our roads here in South Armagh within the space of just over a week,” he said.
“My immediate thoughts are with the family of the deceased and on behalf of the community I extend my deepest sympathy to them.”
Last Friday evening, a 58-year-old man died after being hit by a vehicle at Newtown Road between Belleeks and Newtownhamilton.
Mr McCreesh is the eighth person to die on Northern Ireland’s roads so far this year.
