Armagh fans hoping to travel to Dublin by train for their All-Ireland quarter-final against Monaghan this weekend look set to disappointed.
Services running between Lurgan, Portadown and Newry sold-out within minutes of the confirmation that Armagh will face Monaghan in Croke Park at 6pm on Saturday evening.
Tyrone face Kerry in the proceeding game the same day.
It’s Armagh’s second quarter final appearance in two years, with last season’s dramatic penalty shootout defeat to Galway witnessed by well in excess of 30,000 Orchard county fans on the day. Saturday’s game, which will pit Armagh as slight favourites against neighbours Monaghan, could see even more supporters attempt to get their hands on tickets.
Newry and Armagh MLA Justin McNulty – an All-Ireland winner with Armagh in 2002 – has spoken with Translink in a bid to have additional special services put on to accommodate the swell of fans looking to make the journey south.
In a letter addressed to Translink Group Cheif Executive, Mr McNulty stated: “Last year I worked with you and your colleagues to secure several special Translink Rail Services from Portadown and Newry to Dublin Connolly and return, all of which sold out within a short time frame.
“I and many GAA fans would be most relieved to hear confirmation that preparations are under way from Translink to arrange train specials once again this year. I would more than happy to assist in relaying any information in relation to this via my own channels. I hope you’re keeping well Chris, and thank you in anticipation of a positive outcome.”
