Bail refused Portadown man accused of ‘shouting racial slurs’ towards police officer

He is also alleged to have assaulted a man, grabbed his necklace, breaking it and leaving marks on the man's neck

Craigavon Court

A Portadown man allegedly shouted ‘racial slurs’ towards a PSNI officer.

Sean McShane (25), of Tandragee Road, is charged with harassment of the police officer.

He is also accused of assaulting a man; causing criminal damage to the man’s necklace; and attempting to cause criminal damage to a PSNI cell van on the same day.

The charges relate to December 5 last year.

The defendant appeared, via video link from prison, at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Opposing bail, a police officer said the harassment was “aggravated by hate”.

He said police were called to Tandragee Road; there had been an argument and a man alleged the defendant had “kissed” the man’s girlfriend.

The defendant allegedly grabbed the man’s necklace, breaking it and leaving marks on his neck.

The defendant was “very aggressive” towards police and had handcuffs and limb restrains applied, the court heard, and when taken to a police station was kicking and hitting his head off a cell van door.

The officer told the court the defendant was “aggressive” towards a policeman, “shouting racial slurs at him on at least four separate occasions calling him a ‘f*cking P*ki b*stard’ and ‘an Indian’.”

Bail was refused and the defendant was further remanded in custody and the case was adjourned to January 23.
