Court told man who smashed woman’s window also threatened to cut her throat

He was restrained by police as they got the knife off him with CS spray being used during the arrest

A Portadown man who threatened to cut a woman’s throat and smashed her window must wait until the New Year to learn his fate.

Court heard that the 35-year-old was currently engaged in probation for a similar offence.

Christopher Sweeten, of Corcrain Avenue, pleaded guilty to criminal damage, possession of a weapon with intent to commit assault and assault on police at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Prosecution outlined that on June 11, police received a report of a male covered in blood carrying a knife on Obins Street in Portadown.

The injured party reported that the defendant had smashed her window and threatened to cut her throat.

Sweeten was restrained by police as they got the knife off him, with CS spray being used during the arrest.

When interviewed, the defendant made full admissions.

Defence barrister David McKeown stated: “Two weeks ago he was given a suspended sentence by the Crown Court.

“Although his record shows that probation has been revoked that is not true. He was given time to reengage last week and I would ask that your worship’s sentence does not interfere with this.”

District Judge Mark McGarrity commented: “He was given this probation order for a similar offence.”

Mr McKeown explained: “During the time that he missed his appointments his uncle was unwell and subsequently passed away but after that he continued to reengage.”

District Judge McGarrity said: “I will require clarity with regards the probation order. If he has not engaged this may be a case for immediate custody.”

The case was adjourned until January 15 for an updated presentence report.
