A Co. Kildare man who is alleged to have assaulted a female in Portadown has been released on bail despite no address in this jurisdiction.

The 24-year-old was granted bail with conditions to have no contact with the injured party and not to enter Bridgeford Meadows, Portadown.

Alpha Bah Mamadou, with an address in Maynooth, appeared charged with a single count of common assault at Armagh Magistrates’, sitting at Newry.

Appearing via videolink from police custody, the defendant confirmed that he understood the charge and was connected to the same by a constable.

Defence solicitor Kevin McCamley informed the court that his client would be seeking to contest the charge and that a bail application was being made on his behalf.

The constable stated that bail was opposed as Mamadou could not provide a bail address in this jurisdiction.

None of the facts in the case were heard, however, the particulars allege that on July 19 the defendant unlawfully assaulted a female.

Mr McCamley stated that an address of Lyreen Manor in Maynooth had been put forward and a surety of £500 could also be made available.

The constable accepted that if an address had been available the previous day Mamadou would not be before the court.

Deputy District Judge Peter Prenter granted the defendant his own bail of £500, with a cash surety of £500 to be lodged prior to release.

Conditions of this bail included to have contact with the alleged injured party and not to enter Bridgeford Meadows, Portadown.

The case was adjourned until August 17 for an update in the case.
