A man who allegedly assaulted a woman with a hammer, guitar and a plank of wood and sprayed Lynx deodorant in her eyes has had the case elevated to the Crown Court.
Conor James McConville (32), of Portmore Street in Portadown, is accused of grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a plank of wood, guitar and hammer as offensive weapons on August 27 last year.
On Friday he appeared at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court via video link from prison where he has been on remand.
Arraignment at the Crown Court is due on September 4.
Objecting to bail, a police officer said the PSNI responded to a report of a disturbance at 1.30pm on August 27 at the defendant’s address.
Shouting could be heard and the defendant appeared at a window and had “blood dripping” from his face and appeared to be “under the influence”.
Smashing could be heard and there was shouting between a female and the defendant.
Police entered and saw the defendant had cuts to his head, eyebrow and hand.
The woman was lying face down on an overturned table. A hammer and a “pool of blood” were observed next to her head.
She sat up and police noted a substantial amount of blood around her face, hands, arms and legs. She had a cut on her forehead.
She had bruises on her arms and legs and she complained about having being struck on the back. She was given first aid and an ambulance was called.
The defendant told police the woman hit him on the head with an empty bottle following an argument.
The woman told police the defendant had awoke feeling ill and had gone to a pharmacy to get a heroin replacement drug on prescription but it was not available.
She said the defendant returned home with a bottle of vodka.
The woman told police that when an argument began she was punched by the defendant and struck by a plank of wood, a hammer and guitar and “he was also alleged to have sprayed sprayed Lynx deodorant in her eyes,” said the police officer.
The defendant had 157 previous convictions.
A defence solicitor said the defendant claimed he was struck with a hammer and a bottle of ‘Fireball’ during the incident on August 27.
The bail application was adjourned until June 13.
