A Portadown man who left his car after a collision to get home as his “family life was falling apart” has been handed five penalty points.
Court heard the 34-year-old’s vehicle was found abandoned on a grass verge after it had collided with a street sign.
Noel Martin Hughes, of Ballyoran Park, pleaded guilty to failing to report, failing to to stop and failing to remain at an accident at Craigavon Magistrates’ on Friday.
It was heard that on March 17, police were called to a road traffic collision on the Moyraverty Road West, Craigavon.
Officers arrived to find a vehicle abandoned on a grass verge, which appeared to have collided with a street sign.
They attended at the home of the last registered owner of the vehicle and spoke to the defendant who made full admissions to the offence.
Defence counsel stated: “Mr Hughes’s family life was falling apart and he was just trying to get home, the collision happened and he left his car before heading on home.
“His family life is now back on track and he is working in Cookstown; he requires his licence to travel there everyday.”
Hughes was handed five penalty points and ordered to pay a fine of £300, along with the offender’s levy of £15, within eight weeks.
