The mystery surrounding the discovery of human remains in a shallow grave in Portadown has been solved.
Doctor Roisin O’Reilly of Human Remains Services Ireland (HRSI) were consulted on the find this afternoon, with the bones declared “historical”.
It is understood the unused plot in Seagoe Cemetery was being dug up when the remains, which are thought to be more than 100 years old, were unearthed.
A PSNI spokesperson said: “[HRSI] were consulted and the remains were determined to be historical and are set to be reinterred.”
The Seagoe Cemetery is managed by Armagh, Banbridge, and Craigavon Borough Council.
Elected representatives were notified of the discovery early this morning before police were called in.
The cemetery will be re-opened to the public following the conclusion of the operation.
