Sinn Féin Mayor speaks out after ‘sustained’ online abuse since taking office

Sinn Féin Councillor Mary O’Dowd says she has been subjected to “sustained” and “completely unacceptable” personal abuse online since becoming Lord Mayor of Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council.

Cllr O’Dowd, who took up the first citizen role earlier this year, said that while political disagreement and scrutiny are an essential part of public life, there can be no excuse for personal attacks or intimidation.

She said: “The personal abuse I have been subjected to online since becoming Mayor is completely unacceptable.

“Everyone has the right to disagree with my views or challenge the work I do as an elected representative. Debate, scrutiny and accountability are fundamental to democracy. However, there is never any justification for personal abuse or intimidation.”

The Sinn Féin representative said her experience is sadly a familiar one for many women in politics and public life.

“Unfortunately, this is an experience that many women in public life know all too well,” she continued.

“While robust political disagreement is both healthy and necessary, personal attacks are not. This type of behaviour is toxic, unacceptable and has no place in our society.”

Cllr O’Dowd insisted the abuse will not deflect her from carrying out her duties as mayor or representing her constituents.

She added: “I will continue to represent my community with commitment and determination, and I will not be intimidated by those who seek to silence or discourage me through online abuse.”
