A fresh search is on for a site for a new day care centre in south Armagh – more than 10 years after the need for the facility was first highlighted.
The project had seen a site being selected in Crossmaglen, which was seen as a suitable location.
But now it has been claimed that the development cannot proceed at the preferred base.
Health Minister Simon Hamilton is to be quizzed on the delays and asked to provide an explanation to local people.
Newry and Armagh MLA Megan Fearon said she will be seeking a meeting over the future of the proposed day centre with Mr Hamilton.
The Sinn Fein MLA described the issue as “a matter of urgency”.
A business case for the centre, to cater for adults with a range of learning disabilities, was presented to the Trust for a site at Newry Road.
The cost of the facility, which provide 40 places, was almost £3.74 million.
“The Crossmaglen Day Care Centre remains unresolved after the issue was first explored over 10 years ago,” explained Ms Fearon.
“Most recently, the Southern Health and Social Care Trust Estates have been advised that the site, for which an offer was previously made, is outside the zone for development.
“Southern Health and Social Care Trust Estates have now instructed Land and Property Services to carry out a search in Crossmaglen for other possibilities.
“I believe two possible sites have now been identified within the development zone, and information is now being acquired as to the value and availability of these sites.
“This long promised project will be a huge benefit to the people of the area and it’s important that there are no more undue delays in delivering it.”
