Residents of a housing estate in South Armagh are being forced to block off areas of their homes as the overpowering stench of raw sewage has become intolerable.
There have been fears expressed for the health of those living in the area of Remonds Close, at Lislea, and concerns that the situation has the potential to get worse.
The issue has been raised at the monthly meeting of Newry and Mourne Council by SF Cllr Roisin Mulgrew, who has called on NI Water to bring forward a scheme to resolve the situation once and for all.
She said: “The residents of Redmonds Close have been putting up with the intolerable situation of the stench from raw sewage.
“This has been going on far too long and NI Water has been unable to resolve the problem.
“Some residents are fearful of the impact of the current problem on their health, whilst others have showed me where they effectively had to block of sections of their homes where the stench is at its worst.
“I raised the matter at the Council to seek support to address this unacceptable situation. It now appears that either the system may not be able to cope with the current usage levels or there is a substandard infrastructure in the locality.
“The continued development of the area will further compound this totally unacceptable situation.”
