A young Co Armagh chef is hoping to add another astonishing achievement to his burgeoning collection of awards later this month.
Richhill’s Mark Winter – fresh off winning Northern Ireland’s Young Chef of the Year – is hoping to be named the best in Britain at a glitzy ceremony in London on May 24.
The list of winners, as voted for by the public, will be announced at the red carpet event on the night.
The Lorne Erne sous chef is one of 10 finalists, chosen by industry experts, in the running for best Young Chef of the Year.
The 23-year-old is hoping to make his mark on one of the biggest stages of all, alongside nominees and luminaries such as Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Oliver, Heston Blumenthal and Gino D’Acampo – all nominated in the main Chef of the Year category.
Speaking to Armagh I, Mark said: “All a bit surreal, being the only person from Northern Ireland is a massive achievement in itself, but I will go there and just enjoy the event in itself.”
His mum Donna, who wants everyone to get behind her son, said she is a very proud mum.
“It has really lifted me and the family,” she explained. “I gave up my we cafe in Richhill due to breast cancer, although I’m on the better side of it now but this is just the icing on the cake. You love to see your kids succeed and I am certainly no different.
