What has been described by police as a “sophisticated cannabis factory” has been uncovered at a farm in South Armagh.
Police have confirmed tonight (Wednesday), that cannabis plants, with an estimated street value of more than £77,000, were discovered at the property at Rowan Road in Derrynoose.
The operation earlier today was conducted by officers from E District working alongside HM Revenue and Customs as part of efforts to target fuel laundering in South Armagh.
A number of items believed to have been used in fuel laundering were also located at the farm.
The cannabis plants, cultivation equipment and other items have been removed from the property.
Sinn Féin Councillor Darren McNally has described the discovery of the cannabis factory as “a worrying development in our community.”
He said while he and others in the community were disturbed to hear that cannabis was being cultivated in Derrynoose, he is glad that this batch of the drug has been removed from circulation.
Councillor McNally told Armagh I: “While I and others were disturbed to hear that drugs are being cultivated in our locality, it is time that we realised that drugs have permeated into every community on this island. Alongside the production, supply and sale of drugs come the associated problems of crime, theft and antisocial behaviour.
“I am glad that the PSNI have removed this particular batch from circulation but I have no doubt that those who abuse drugs will find other avenues to feed their addiction.
“Drugs ruin people’s lives and destroy communities; we need to put plans in place to treat and help those who are hooked on drugs and to educate young people about the reality of drug misuse. Anybody, regardless of background, could potentially fall victim to drugs and I believe education is the key to avoid this happening.”
