South Armagh man Conor McGinn is today celebrating after clinching victory for Labour on merseyside.
The son of a former Sinn Féin councillor Pat McGinn won a majority in St Helen’s North with 26,378 votes.
His nearest rival was Conservatives’ Paul Daryl Richardson who raked in 9,087 votes.
However, it wasn’t such great news for his party as a whole with the Conservatives delivering a majority victory.
Conor McGinn said in his victory speech: “The message from St Helens is loud and clear – this is a Labour borough. St Helens North stands proud today, as it always has done. I as a Member of Parliament will stand with people here as we meet the future challenges ahead.
“I want to finish by paying tribute to Dave Watts, the man I succeed. Dave has served people here for 39 years as a councillor and MP. I feel honoured to be spoken of in the same breath.”
