South Armagh man given suspended jail term for waste offences

A south Armagh man has been given a suspended jail sentence for breaching waste management legislation.

Fifty-three-year-old Bernard Hughes, of Culloville Road, Crossmaglen, was also made the subject of a £5,000 compensation order at Newry Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

The defendant was found guilty of one charge of keeping controlled waste without there being in place an exemption or licence.

In addition to the £5,000 compensation order, he was given a four months’ sentence, suspended for three years.

The court heard that on February 4, 2014, officers from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency carried out a site inspection on lands at Culloville Road, Crossmaglen.

At that time they found controlled waste, including waste clay, stone, vehicle batteries, vehicle tyres, numerous vehicle parts and scrap vehicles.

All were present without the necessary permissions required by the NIEA.
