Camlough man accused of strangling mother has charges withdrawn

A Camlough man who was accused earlier this year of strangling his mother has had the most serious charges against him withdrawn at court.

Darren Jamie McCabe (25), of Ashmore Hill, had appeared before Armagh Magistrates’ Court where the prosecution confirmed that counts of criminal damage, non-fatal strangulation or asphyxiation, and threatening or abusive behaviour had all been withdrawn.

McCabe pleaded guilty to a single count of possessing a Class B controlled drug, relating to a small quantity of cannabis found by police during the incident on June 22 this year.

He was convicted and handed a two-year conditional discharge. The court also ordered that the drugs be forfeited and destroyed.

McCabe first appeared before the court in June, accused of attacking his mother in the home they shared in Camlough.

District Judge Anne Marshall had previously refused bail, citing concerns about reoffending, and the case was adjourned for further consideration.

However, at the most recent sitting, the prosecution formally confirmed that only the drug possession charge would proceed, with all other matters withdrawn.
