A Co Armagh pensioner killed in a farming accident on Wednesday will be laid to rest on Easter Monday.
Matt McCoy, who was in his 70s, tragically passed away following an incident on his farm on the Newry Road in Mullaghbawn.
It is understood he had stayed overnight with a calving cow on Tuesday evening through to Wednesday.
The Health and Safety Executive are investigating the incident but Mr McCoy’s death is not being treated as suspicious.
Family priest Fr John Heagney said the entire community has been left devastated.
“The family are incredibly shocked and saddened, he was a good family man and neighbour,” he told the Belfast Telegraph.
“The whole neighbourhood is shocked,” he added.
“Matt was very well-known as a farmer in the community here and very well liked. His wife is incredibly sad.”
President of the Ulster Farmers’ Union Barclay Bell said the death was a stark illustration of the perils of farming.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this very difficult time,” he said.
“It is a tragic reminder that farms are busy workplaces and can sometimes be dangerous.
“The HSENI is investigating the circumstances of the incident, but it is a sad reminder that you can never be too careful on a farm.”
Mr McCoy was the dearly beloved husband of Delia and devoted father of Adele, father-in-law of Christopher and much loved grandfather of Shannon, Aoibheann, Phelim and Erin-Grace. Dear brother of Petesy and the late Patsy.
His funeral mass will take place on Monday, April 2 at 11am in St Mary’s Church, Mullaghbawn. Family flowers only please.
