First step in addressing ‘long-standing’ issue of parking in south Armagh

Penalties will now be dished out to motorists who park and obstruct footpaths on the Flagstaff Road in south Armagh.

Sinn Féin Councillor Liz Kimmins has confirmed that the Department of Infrastructure (DfI) has commenced actions to address residents’ concerns in the area.

“Following representation from local residents who expressed serious concerns regarding the issue of vehicle parking along the Flagstaff Road, I had lobbied the Department earlier this year and they have delivered on their promise of double yellow lines,” explained councillor Kimmins.

She added: “I am fully aware that this is only a small step in addressing this longstanding problem and I have since met with the PSNI to highlight the need for monitoring this area and enforcement for those who fail to adhere to the lines.

“As well as this, cars obstructing the footpath or road can also receive sanctions, as this is one of the key issues identified by the local residents.

“The residents of this area and parishioners attending Cloughogue Chapel continue to face serious difficulties on a daily basis as a result of the parking situation.”

Ms Kimmins did however point to the fact there is a need for Park and Share facilities.

“I also fully acknowledge the need for additional Park and Share facilities for people who need to park so they can go to work,” she said.

“I am also pleased to announce that DFI are planning to carry out a feasibility study for an additional Park and Share site to meet this need.

“I will continue to liaise with the relevant statutory bodies to ensure these issues are effectively addressed and to deliver a solution that will improve the situation for everyone.”
