A major £690,000 resurfacing scheme has been announced for a busy stretch of the A29 New Road at Silverbridge – with weekday road closures planned for almost two months from later this month.
Sinn Féin MLA Liz Kimmins has confirmed that work will begin on Monday, April 13, 2026, delivering asphalt resurfacing over 2.2 kilometres of the A29.
The scheme will run from around 700 metres south of Tullydonnell Road to approximately 750 metres north of the junction with Ballsmill Road.
The Infrastructure Minister said: “This is a substantial investment for the Silverbridge area which will deliver significant benefits for local businesses, residents and road users. The investment demonstrates my commitment to improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities.
“This work will greatly improve the strength and surface quality of this section of the road network to the benefit of local residents, businesses and those travelling in the Silverbridge area. Work is expected to be substantially completed by Friday 5 June 2026. I would like to thank residents, local businesses and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out.”
To facilitate the safe delivery of the scheme, a daily weekday road closure will be in place from Monday, April 13 to Friday, June 5, 2026, between 9.30am and 4.30pm (Monday–Friday). The road will remain open in the evenings and at weekends.
Signed diversion routes will be in operation:
- Traffic travelling towards Dundalk will be diverted via A29 New Road, B30 Newry Road, The Square, Cullaville Road, A37 Concession Road, Route N53, N53 Castletown Road, R132 Newry Road and R177 Armagh Road.
- Traffic travelling towards Newtownhamilton will be diverted via R177 Armagh Road, R132 Newry Road, Linenhall Street, Bridge Street, N53 Castletown, Route N53, A37 Concession Road, B30 Cullaville Road, The Square, Newry Road and A29 New Road.
The Department has programmed the work operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience. However, while steps have been taken to accommodate local access, road users should expect some delays, are advised to allow additional time when travelling in the vicinity of the works, and are asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions.
Subject to favourable weather conditions, the works will be substantially complete by Friday, June 5, 2026. The Department has said it will keep the public informed of any change to the schedule.
