Plans have been submitted for nine new apartments in the centre of Camlough, Armagh I can reveal.
The proposals also include the development of a ground floor commercial unit in the centre of the south Armagh village.
There has also been a separate application lodged for a new pub next door at number 23 Main Street.
Planners at Newry, Mourne and Down Council will now consider the two applications, which were both submitted on behalf of the applicant Donall Boyle, earlier this month.
A previous application for a bar and restaurant at number 23 had been granted back in 2015, however, those plans were not proceeded with at the time.
The mixed-use development at 17-21 Main Street currently consists of a public house, bookmakers, commercial retail unit and associated car parking.
The focus of this proposal, according to the papers submitted, is to “integrate a new development scheme within the existing streetscape”, adding “the sensitive design of the proposed scheme will allow the range of uses to coexist peacefully”.
The development scheme would provide “a range of high quality ground floor commercial units with apartments above”.
“There is a presumption in favour of development that makes a positive contribution to ensure existing town and village centres continue to provide a focus every day shopping and recreation. The proposed development respects the character of the area and will attract new visitors to Camlough”.
The development “will increase the housing supply in the centre of the village which is well served by public transport” and “provide much needed residential accommodation which will go someway to addressing the local housing need”.
Planners will consider the applications in due course, with a decision expected before the end of the year.
