New ‘Go’ filling station and 5,000 sq ft shop with ATM earmarked for Camlough

Camlough could be in line for a new Go petrol filling station and 5,000 sq ft shop as part of a significant investment in the village.

The development could see a jobs boost for the area too, with papers indicating 14 staff on site daily when up and running.

Proposals for the new facility are on the site of the former Riverside filling station, at 9 Newry Road, Camlough, which also housed a number of other retail units and businesses.

The application has been drawn up by the Cookstown-based fuel giant LCC Group, which owns the Go petrol station brand.

The amenities would represent a replacement of the existing filling station, which has been derelict for more than six years now.

The work would first involve the demolition of the existing steel structures and buildings on site.

It would then see the creation of a petrol filling station – complete with eight fuel pumps – as well as a retail shop.

There would be a forecourt canopy covering the four islands on which the eight pumps would be located.

There would be a total of 50 parking spaces – 45 for customers and five for staff. There would also be a number of disabled parking bays to the front of the shop and a bicycle stand too.

A tanker stand, access via the Newry Road and associated siteworks are included in the proposals, which are now with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

The new shop would have a floorspace in the region of 5,000 sq ft, with an outdoor seating area included.

And the glazed-fronted retail unit would include a 24-hour ATM machine in the exterior wall.

According to a design and access statement, it would ensure the long-term viability of the site by re-establishing an active use for it.

The centrally placed enterprise is less than 200 metres from St Oliver Plunkett Park, and close to Camlough Rovers FC, Shane O’Neill’s GFC, Slieveview Furniture Shop and Camlough Metal.

The access statement adds: “The proposal brings an otherwise redundant site back into positive use for the benefit of the surrounding area.

“The overall layout and design for the proposal is complementary to the surrounding context, with other retail businesses situated along Newry Road.”

The proposals are now with NMD Council and will be advertised shortly.
