Double blow: Firefighter uncle of tragic Tandragee teen attended fatal crash scene

Morgan Henry

A heartfelt tribute was paid to a tragic Tandragee teenager who died following a road traffic collision earlier this month.

Morgan Henry, who was just 18, passed away following a two-vehicle collision near Portadown in the early hours of April 6.

The teenager was the driver of the car involved in the crash, and four occupants of the other car were also injured.

He was the beloved son of Lauren and Gareth, brother of Reuben and Cherith, grandson of Caroline and Colin Whitten, as well as David and the late Doris Henry, and great-grandson of Kenny and Eleanor Matchett.

Speaking at Monday night’s (April 28) monthly meeting of Armagh City, Banbridge & Craigavon (ABC) Borough Council, the Independent representative for Cusher DEA asked ABC Lord Mayor, Councillor Sarah Duffy, to contact the family circle to convey the council’s sadness following such a tragic loss.

He stated: “[I would like] to just say a few words in relation to the tragic road traffic death of young Morgan Henry, just at 18 years of age.

“Morgan was tragically killed on the Dungannon Road just at the beginning of this month.

“He was from Tandragee town, and obviously I would like it if you as our Lord Mayor would write a letter assuring the family, Gareth and Lauren, and also Morgan’s brother and sister, Ruben and Cherith, of our prayers and thoughts at this tragic time. Also to the family and friends.

“Every funeral is sad and obviously every death is tragic, but when one looks at an 18-year-old’s coffin going down the aisle of the church, it is heartbreaking, and especially when you take a look at the hundreds of young people in that particular gathering that are sorrowing just the same as the family.

“The service was held by Rev Elizabeth Cairns. It was a very fitting and lovely service, and his friends paid tribute to Morgan, but I would also like you to remember the Whitten family as well, which is the grandparents, because they’re also well known in the area.

“I think I’d also place on record our thanks to the emergency services, because once again they’re called to such a scene, and it’s at times like this you wonder just how they actually cope with such incidents.

“It also added to the tragedy that young Morgan’s uncle, who’s an Incident Commander in the Fire Brigade, attended that scene.

“So it was a double blow to them on the basis of that particular circumstances.

“To his family and friends, I think it’s important that we send out a message that our prayers and thoughts are with them and continue to be with them at this tragic time, but also to those who are injured.

“There was four in the other car. Three of them were seriously injured. Thankfully they’re out of hospital now and are recovering slowly but surely, but I’ve spoken to one of them and his son is still recovering as a result of that.

“So indeed our prayers are also with them at this time, because it could have been a lot more tragic.”

The Lord Mayor told Ald Berry: “Thank you Alderman Berry. I would like to be associated with your tributes this evening to Morgan and his family, and I will personally ensure that a letter goes to Gareth and Lauren at this sad day.”
