Fundraiser launched to help cover costs of ‘inspirational’ Tandragee teen’s funeral

A fundraiser has been set up to help the family of an inspirational young Tandragee boy cover his funeral expenses.

The GoFundMe page has been launched with the permission of 18-year-old Blake McCaughey’s family following his sudden passing on Saturday (January 17).

Blake was well known across Tandragee and the wider Armagh area for his resilience in the face of immense health challenges.

Living with rare genetic conditions, he endured years of complex medical treatment and mobility difficulties, yet remained a constant source of inspiration to so many.

His mum, Christine shared an emotional tribute to her unforgettable son on Saturday evening: “Our beautiful, amazing, inspirational Blakey Boy. Today you left to us for heaven and you have left a pain I cannot describe.

“No warning, no words just goodbye my baby boy. 18 years you have called me mummy and I am the proudest mummy in the world to call you mine.”

Blake was a larger than life personality, a popular and familiar face among Portadown True Blues Flute Band and a huge fan of The Belfast Giants. Both of whom paid tribute to the courageous character.

Said Portadown True Blues of their heart-break: “No words can describe the feeling of such a loss that has hit each and every one of us this afternoon but none more so than his immediate family who are also all current members, Christine, Andy, Pixie and Neil.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to each and every one of you. From the moment you first joined the ranks on that first of July night over 10 years ago till the serving of breakfast just last Saturday at our fundraiser Blake, there were never anything but positive vibes when you were present.

“We’ve watched you come through so much and seen you grow into the young adult you became. You’ve been described as a shining star already by many and we will keep that star shining bright forevermore.

“Rest easy young man, you will be sorely missed but forever remembered and loved by your extended family the PTB! Safe in the arms of Jesus.”

A spokesperson for the ice hockey team added: “Everyone at the Belfast Giants is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of 18-year-old Blake McCaughey.

“Blake was a devoted, passionate Belfast Giants fan and an even more incredible young man who touched the hearts of players, coaches, staff, and supporters alike.

“Blake, you will never be forgotten. Once a Giant, always a Giant.”

And now, the fundraising appeal – set with a humble £2,400 target – seeks to support the young man’s family in the difficult days ahead by helping to cover the cost of his funeral.

The GoFundMe description reads: “Blakey was an inspiration to everyone around him. He had struggles from the day he was born but fought through every battle that hit him.

“He lit up every room he entered. As soon as you met him he left an impression on your heart. He loved his Belfast Giants, his flute band, Liverpool and most importantly he adored his friends and his amazing family (especially the women).

“Blakey gained his angel wings on Saturday 17 January. The day when all our hearts broke.

“We have set this fund up to help the family with funeral expenses and any costs going forward. This is a testing time for the family and even if it’s only £1 it will make a difference.”

For his love of Liverpool FC, it adds: “Blakey you will never walk alone. This is not goodbye it’s a see you later gorgeous boy.”

At the time of writing, the crowdfund has already reaped in over £800 in contributions.

The McCaughey family have also generously opened their home to anyone who knew him to pay their respects to Blake’s extraordinary life.
