Traffic congestion issues have led to Armagh Assembly Member Cathal Boylan to request an urgent meeting with Department of Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy.
“We drastically need to see the implementation of the joint West and East Link projects which I feel have stagnated under the current Minister,” Mr Boylan said.
“Armagh City is gridlocked now for much of the day and not just during the typical rush hour times. This is playing havoc with pupils trying to access their local schools, those doing business in our City centre and of course local shoppers who must all brave the snail’s pace progress on the city’s roads.”
Mr Boylan also stated that while there is widespread recognition that Armagh’s congestion must be addressed, many are concerned regarding the East Link’s proposed route.
“My constituency office has had representation from residents of the Ardmore, Thornleigh and Green Fields housing developments who are concerned that the proposed route of the East Link road scheme will have a negative effect on their safety, quality of life and value of property.
“I will be discussing the possibility of alternative routes when I meet Minister Kennedy.
“I have asked Mr Kennedy for a meeting at his earliest convenience to discuss the implementation of these road schemes which have been in the pipeline now for several years.
“The congestion in Armagh can no longer go unchecked and, although significant, the £80 million cost of the required investment should not be a barrier to its implementation.”
