WORK on the restoration of St Brigid’s Well in Armagh – at a cost in excess of a quarter of a million pounds – is due to begin within the next fortnight.
Located in the grounds of the Palace Demesne, a planning application had been submitted in August and the development, with a budget of £260,000, is due to get underway on November 12.
St Brigid’s Well is very much a part of Armagh’s history, as the naming of housing developments, a city-based school and camogie club in the city will testify.
Armagh City and District Council’s headquarters are also located in the Palace Demesne and the local authority will be taking the lead in seeing the project through and ensuring the ancient monument is there for future generations to enjoy.
The project – which has to be completed by a deadline date of March 31, 2013 – follows a successful bid for funding, submitted in 2008, for the development of a Masterplan for the overall Palace Demesne.
Work is also due to get underway on the comprehensive Palace Park project, providing public space and amenities in a city setting for all in the community.
