80 free gigs, 18 venues – Culture Night is back!

EIGHTY free events in 18 different venues across Armagh City and District can only mean one thing – the return of Culture Night for 2013!

A top notch line-up has been launched at the Market Place Theatre in Armagh, with all events taking place on Friday, September 20.

This is the second year now that Armagh has taken part in the nationwide event and hardly gives people the chance to get their breath back after the success of the 7Hills Blues Fest.

Culture Night is Ireland’s largest showcase of culture and arts and provides the opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to participate and watch free arts and cultural events.

With Armagh City & District’s rich cultural background there are opportunities to see and participate in theatre, drama, music, guitar workshops, creative writing, poetry readings, choir performances, historical tours, brass bands, art exhibitions, Irish and Scottish dance, organ recitals, classical music, traditional music, modern dance, Hungarian traditional arts, graffiti art, DJs, photography exhibitions, craft workshops and demonstrations, youth drama, jazz music and much, much more.

There will be different venues hosting events including The Market Place Theatre and Arts Centre, The Navan Centre, Abbey Lane Theatre, The Amma Centre, Armagh City & Public Libraries, Armagh Gaol, Armagh Old Boys Band Hall, Armagh Visitor Information Centre, Armagh City Centre Bandstand, Church Of Ireland Cathedral, Armagh Harps Club, The Mall Shopping Centre, various venues in Ponytzpass, Vicar’s Hill, and various cafes around Armagh City Centre.

Lord Mayor of Armagh Robert Turner said at the launch that the programme would “highlight the unique mix of culture that exists within our community”.

And he added: “The council fully recognises that Armagh City and District as an area is very rich in cultural terms and has a strong and very talented mix of local people across all the different spectrums of culture.”

Director of The Market Place Theatre, Jill McEneaney, said promised bigger and better and encouraged all to come along on September 20.

Some of the performers and groups taking part in this year’s FREE programme include Armagh Theatre Group, The John Hewitt Society, Armagh City Choir, Arts Care Choir, Armagh Old Boys Band, Armagh Rhymers, artist Neil Greig, Cantiunculae Chamber Choir, Tassagh Scottish Country Dancers, Coda Horns, Armagh Harps , Hungarian Dancers, Sutemos Youth Dance, Ulster Scots Community Network, Lisanally School Choir, Armagh Art Club, Saints & Scholars School Choir, Drama For Kids, SU Sinfonia Orchestra, Armagh Set Dancers, Lorraine Scallon School Of Irish Dance, Cup O Joe, The Hanna Sisters, CairdeTeo, Armagh Pipers Club and singer Catherine Grimley, to name but a few.
