Anger as large amount of waste dumped on Armagh street ‘less than two minutes’ from recycling centre

'It’s the ratepayer who ends up footing the bill for someone else’s selfish and irresponsible behaviour'

Disbelief and anger were the understandable reactions after a huge amount of unwanted household goods were dumped on an Armagh street.

The incident, near Railway Street, saw all manner of waste deposited in a highly-populated area, including chairs, children’s toys, baby accessories and packaging too.

It comes after another similar incident in April, where a large amount of waste was dumped to the rear of an alleyway, also off Railway Street.

On that occasion, the rubbish sat for days before being taken away.

But when it was, it was with a recognition that it will be ratepayers who will foot the bill.

ABC Council has been asked to act quickly after this latest episode.

Local Sinn Fein Councillor Sarah Duffy said she was “really disappointed” given the sheer volume of items deposited.

What is all the more shocking, she believes, it the close proximity to the civic amenity site at Station Road where it should have been taken in the first place.

Said Councillor Duffy: “I’ve contacted the council and asked for it to be removed as soon as possible, but they shouldn’t have to.

“We have a recycling centre that is open six days a week and is less than two minutes from this latest incident.

“Instead, it’s the ratepayer who ends up footing the bill for someone else’s selfish and irresponsible behaviour.”

The local representative is appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

“If anyone saw this being dumped, noticed suspicious activity in the area, or has any information that could help identify those responsible, please get in touch with me or report it to ABC Council on 0300 0300 900,” she added.
