An Armagh food processing company has been fined in court for a number of offences relating to the composition and labelling of kebabs.
MR Wholesale Foods Ltd, based at the Tullygoonigan Industrial Estate on the Moy Road, Armagh, who specialise in the production of kebabs, pleaded guilty to two charges, that their kebabs were not of the substance demanded by the purchaser and the second charge of falsely described food.
The company was fined £500 on each of the charges with a £15 offender levy on the first charge, with additional costs totalling a further £425.
Handing down the fines in the case brought by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, the presiding Judge urged all companies to be extremely careful about food labelling.
A barrister acting on behalf of the company said the incident had been a “labelling mix up” and told the court of changes which MR Foods Wholesale Ltd have since implemented to address this issue.
A spokesperson for ABC Council welcomed the changes made by the company as a result of the investigation.
“In food production it is vital that food labelling of products accurately describes the food purchased by the consumer,” said the spokesperson.
“Our Environmental Health officers will continue to investigate all concerns relating to food production and food labelling and we are happy to offer advice and guidance on labelling to all businesses involved in the production or sale of food.”
