Armagh residents banking on their local Credit Union to plug the gap

While banks are shuttering and leaving the high street quicker than you can say withdrawal, the Credit Union is banking on an altogether different tact.

Armagh Credit Union, which first opened its doors in May 1962, is priding itself on being part of the community – placed in its very heart on Russell Street.

What’s more, the Credit Union is owned and controlled by its members, which adds to the already top quality personal service it offers each and every member.

Speaking to Armagh I, branch manager Justin Mallon, said: “We are very much community based and whilst we see banks closing in the towns, we in the Credit Union are proud of our heritage and tradition and we’ve been in Armagh for the past 60 years.

“One benefit of banking with Armagh Credit Union is our focus on personal service. Credit Unions are often smaller than banks and have a more personal touch when it comes to their interactions with members.

“We are focused on serving our community, and we work to support local businesses and sports clubs. By banking with a credit union, you are putting your money back into the community, which can help support local economic growth.”

And youth is something Armagh Credit Union is “very proud to support” and over the last 12 months alone it has sponsored a local football club and Armagh Camogie, giving these organisations valuable funding to assist with their youth development programmes and club competitions.

With an array of services ranging from preferential rates on loans as well as higher interest rates on deposits which translate into significant savings for members over time, Armagh Credit Union has recently launched their new website to make it easier for members to avail of banking services.

Senior Clerical Officer Aidan Murphy joined the branch 18 months ago, and alongside manager Justin, worked on improving their online presence.

“Loans is a lot easier to apply for with functions for members to apply for up to £30,000 sitting from the comfort off their own sofa,” said Mr Murphy.
