An annual summer camp in Armagh that looked destined to be cancelled over a funding row has been saved thanks to the good will of the community.
Last Friday (April 21), Armagh I reported how the annual Irish language camp – Campa Mhacha – was to be pulled after missing out on funding.
It had been claimed, by funding body responsible for supporting the event, that it did not receive the application on time, hence removal of vital subsidence.
Organisers refuted those claims saying the application was sent off in good time.
The issue is still being investigated but Armagh I understands the event will still go ahead this summer thanks to community organistions who have stepped in to offer their help.
A spokesperson for Cairde Teo told Armagh I: “A number of local organisations, including Gael Linn and Cult Úr have offered some financial assistance which will allow us to organise a number of events as part of Campa Mhacha this summer.
“We are planning a few trips for young people who attend local Irish medium schools in early July.
“A number of local MLAs, Councillors and representatives from Alliance, SF, SDLP are following it up on our behalf.”
They added: “It’s fantastic the amount of good will and support the community have given and the parents’ petition has well over 1000 signatures.
“The fact that some organisations actually came to us to offer financial support is incredible, so we’re obviously extremely grateful.”
