‘Eddie made it!’: Armagh cat injured in horrific firework attack survives surgery – minus his tail!

Eddie the cat who was horrifically injured in an Armagh firework attack has pulled through life-saving surgery.

On October 17, Eddie’s owners were devastated to find their beloved pet has sustained severe injuries to his tail and rear end, which they said were believed to have been caused by a firework which had been tied to his tail.

The injuries were so severe that Eddie then appeared to have flayed its own tail, exposing much of the bone and remnants of skin.

He was rushed to the USPCA in Newry for urgent treatment, where vets confirmed he had suffered severe internal burns and possible spinal damage. His rectum also required stitching, and he remains under round-the-clock care.

He needed urgent surgery, but his owners were devastated to hear that the vets remained unsure at the time as to whether or not it would save him.

Today, however, the USPCA have gleefully announced that Eddie made it!

In an update via social media, they said: “After tireless work from our veterinary team, and Eddie’s own fighting spirit, we’re thrilled to say he is recovering well and has been able to return home!

“You may have seen Eddie in the media recently. Poor Eddie was recently the victim of an appalling act of animal cruelty as a firework was deliberately attached to his tail and exploded, causing horrific injuries.

“His tail had to be amputated, and he required intensive wound care, IV antibiotics, and pain relief as he recovered. Despite the unimaginable suffering he endured, Eddie has shown incredible strength throughout and he was such an affectionate, trusting boy with our team.

“We condemn the cruel actions of those responsible for this shocking attack. There is no excuse for such deliberate harm to a defenceless animal.”
