Summer is nearing. The promise of fair weather has us all outdoors with the walking shoes and lighter clothing finding their way out of winter retirement.
But where to go? Sometimes it can be easy to overlook what’s on your doorstep.
Armagh and the wider borough have much to offer the leisurely summer rambler… you just need to know where to look.
While Gosford Forest Park, The Palace Stables, the Mall, Clare Glen and South Lakes all have their individual charms, there are a few off-the-beaten-path walks just as alluring as the behemoths.
Darkley Forest Park
The 2.7km trail at Darkley Forest starts at the eight-space car park at Mountain Lodge Road and accommodates a wide range of users.
Explore the beautiful forest scenery along the Callan River which loops around returning to the trailhead.
It’s an ideal route for the entire family with a few slight inclines that allow walkers to take in a number of stunning lake and countryside views.
Benburb Valley Park
The 100-acre estate sits on the bank of River Blackwater and offers walkers the opportunity to explore and enjoy natural and built heritage.
The walk encompasses Priory House, Benburb Castle, the Benburb Centre, Library and Museum.
The Stables Coffee Shop and the Benburb Arts and Craft Studios offer the perfect space to relax and unwind after a leisurely stroll.
A Bluebell Walk has recently been developed on site and there are a number of ideal places to snap that perfect photo – so remember to bring your camera!
Folly Glen
This walk starts at Mall West and is centered around the urban area of Armagh.
It provides a little solace to city life with its roving paths, slight inclines, and views of the babbling Folly River.
This is a relatively short walk that can be completed as an out and back or as a loop, taking in some city sights along the way.
The Glen at Glenanne
This is perhaps the most hidden of all the gems on the list.
The Glen, adjacent to Shaw’s Lake Glenanne, is deceptive from the trailhead. Until it has been fully explored it cannot be fully appreciated.
Over the last few years The Glen’s 30-acre site has undergone huge restoration work including the removal of ivy and clearing of waterways in order to once again make it an accessible and valuable asset to the community.
There are four routes to choose from including The Dam Walk, Mill Path, Tram Lines and The Rocks.
Take a ramble down all four routes and see if you can spy the waterfall!
