Two part RTE show embarks on journey through Armagh and St Patrick’s Way

A TV chef, food writer and cookery school owner has embarked on a ‘Soulful Journey’ in an exploration of the “breath-taking” scenery of Armagh and Down.

Catherine Fulvio’s new two-part series entitled Soulful Journey follows Northern Ireland’s Saint Patrick’s Way and will air on RTE1 on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th March (8pm) in the run up to St Patrick’s Day.

Owner of Ballyknocken House & Cookery School, Catherine takes viewers on a journey along Saint Patrick’s Way: The Pilgrim Walk, a 132-kilometer trail through the Cathedral County and home of Ireland’s spiritual capital, Armagh and onward through the beautiful coastal landscape of County Down in the North of Ireland.

Working with Discover Northern Ireland Catherine said that “It was an absolute delight and during this two part series I had the privilege of exploring the breath-taking scenery of Armagh and Down while delving into the rich history of St. Patrick along the pilgrim way.

“Not surprisingly, I also got to indulge in some of the most delectable local cuisine while meeting interesting characters along the route who were able to show me some of the best of Northern Ireland.

“It was a truly memorable experience that ignited my passion for Irish heritage and am delighted to share some incredible experiences with viewers that can be found right here on our doorstep.”

A Tapestry of History and Tradition

This enriching two-part series sees Catherine journey through unspoilt natural scenery on an immersive exploration of history, spirituality and the unique culture that defines Ireland’s pilgrim path as she experiences world class local food and drink.

From Armagh to Downpatrick – St. Patrick’s final resting place – this programme offers a blend of the natural world, meaningful conversations and culinary delights that highlight the beauty and depth of this iconic route which opened 10 years ago.

With an increased interest in slow travel, wellness, and outdoor experiences, this series resonates with a diverse audience as Catherine engages with locals, uncovers stories of the past, learns about innovative farming practices and explores the sacred and cultural significance of our patron Saint.

Collecting stamps on her Pilgrim Passport at key locations along the way this route can be done in either direction and at different stages.

Known for its rich heritage and iconic landscapes, this part of Northern Ireland comes alive in the series through engaging storytelling.

Tune in and join Catherine Fulvio on a journey along Saint Patrick’s Way as she offers a glimpse into the life and legacy of Ireland’s patron saint but also an invitation to the range of experiences and attractions of this remarkable area less than 90 minutes from Dublin.

This two-part series culminates with Catherine reflecting over her journey in Armagh and Down as she highlights how the route supports not only personal growth but also the social and economic vitality of the communities along its way.

Episode 1 (Thursday 13th March, RTE 1 at 8pm)

Episode one highlights Armagh’s rich history with a guided tour with Donna Fox before meeting Geopark Manager Darren Rice to explore Gosford Forest Park and learn about the Mourne Gullion Strangford area, awarded a designated UNESCO Global Geopark in 2023, one of only four in Ireland.

Catherine ends her day with a spot of forest bathing at Killeavy Castle Estate which is set on 365 acres of mixed farm and woodland in the stunning Ring of Gullion; the ideal place to relax and unwind and enjoy after a long walk.

Episode 2 (Friday 14th March, RTE 1 at 8pm)

In Episode two Catherine takes viewers through County Down, from the village of Rostrevor with guide Peter Rafferty, over Spelga Dam, through Tollymore Forest Park, all set in the dramatic backdrop of the Mourne Mountains.

In the seaside town of Newcastle she meets Chef Paul Cunningham for some foraging before a dramatic horseback beach ride along Tyrella beach to meet St Patrick’s Way guides Elaine Kelly and Martina Purdy who bring her on a spiritual journey to St Patrick’s resting place in Downpatrick. 

Catherine finishes her journey in the surrounds of Finnebrogue Estate as she learns the art of bushcraft before settling down in a tipi for her final night’s sleep.
