Banbridge motocross enthusiast gets send off ‘she so rightly deserves’

A Banbridge woman who “lived and breathed motoX” got the send off she “so rightly deserved” on Monday (February 9) as crowds lined the streets of Rathfriland to watch the motorcycle bound cortege lead the hearse to St John’s Parish Church.

Avril Andrews – originally of Katesbridge – was the Club Secretary of the MotoCross Club of Northern Ireland (MCCNI). Known as “The Boss”, Avril was deeply embedded in the club, the sport and its people.

Leading tributes following her sudden passing on February 5, MCCNI said: “The sudden passing of our Club Secretary, Avril Andrews, has left a huge void in our motocross family.

“Avril lived and breathed motoX—she poured her heart, soul, and every ounce of energy into the sport, the Club, and the people in it.

“She was a force to be reckoned with; when Avril raised her voice, everyone jumped—even the grown men—because she was The Boss, and she earned that respect through tireless dedication and fierce love for the sport.

“She gave so much of herself, and her passion will be felt for years to come. Our deepest condolences go to her children, grandchildren, and all her family. Anyone who knows motoX knows this Club is one big family, and we will miss Avril terribly.”

On the day of her funeral that community she lived to serve turned out – replete with helmets and leathers – revving their engines as they led the cortege to the church doors.

Those paying their respects braved the rain as they watched on, solemnly waving flags in her honour.

Said on person of Avril’s procession: “All for “The Boss”. Rest easy Avril Andrews, you were honestly a fantastic woman! Thank you for everything you done for us!!”

“Such a fitting Tribute to the woman herself,” added another.  “The MCCNI paddock will be a sad place without wee Avril scooting about from pillar to post making sure all ran as best it could…. unfortunately she reached the chequered flag long before her time but only god knows the reason.”

A death notice described Avril as the dearly loved Mother of Gary (Catherine), Alanna (John), Cheridan (Jordan), Corbin, Macauley and Cormac, loving Granny to Harrison, Lewis, Jacob, Alita, Wyatt and Ramsey, a much loved Daughter of Herbie and Evelyn and loving Sister of Janice, Alwyn, Alister and Anita.
