Plans whipped up for new ice-cream parlour in Banbridge town centre

The premises in question is a former hairdressing salon in close proximity to what is known locally as the 'Downshire roundabout'

A new ice-cream parlour and café could be on its way to Banbridge town centre.

A change of use application has been submitted to Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council by Neil and Samantha McMurry, of N and S Properties NI Ltd, in relation to 88-90 Newry Street.

The subject premises formerly contained a hairdressing salon which, under proposals, could now be transformed into a café / ice cream parlour.

Changes to the building would also include a new shop front, erection of a single storey extension to the rear of the building and alterations to existing apartment elevations and associated site works.

Plans also indicate that new windows would be fitted and the proposed extension would accommodate disabled toilet provision.

The premises is located at the end of a commercial terrace on the corner of Newry Street and Old Kenlis Street, in close proximity to what is known locally as the ‘Downshire roundabout’.

During school term the area boasts a heavy footfall, with school pupils tending to congregate in the area awaiting buses, collection and taxis home.

Internally – if approved – the proposals would see the westernmost street-facing entrance lead into a seating area for customers, with a counter/serving area to the left.

To the rear of the property there would be access to the disabled toilet and staff room, as well as an external bin area.

The easternmost street-facing entrance would lead directly to a stairwell to the landing of the apartment – which spreads across the first and second floor of the building.

The first floor would comprise an open plan living and kitchen area with a shower room and first bedroom, while the second floor would then comprise an additional two bedrooms and second shower room.

The application is due to be advertised shortly.
