Bessbrook Clinic could be set to double in size if proposals for a major extension and refurbishment programme was given a clean bill of health.
The development at Convent Hill would also see additional staff based at the Bessbrook facility.
The Southern Health Trust’s estates department has lodged its plans with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council for consideration.
No cost has been given, but it is understood it would be a significant investment in healthcare provision in the Co Armagh village.
Indeed, the development would see the new-look clinic almost double the size of the current premises.
The works would see floorspace increase from almost 2,500 sq ft to close to 5,000 sq ft.
It is estimated there would be an additional 10 staff on site daily, increasing from the current six to 16.
The proposals include a new staff kitchen and conversion of store area in the existing into a new staff room.
In a separate new-build to be connected to the present building will be a range of additional uses and services.
This will include a new waiting area and reception, three additional consultation rooms, a treatment room and an interview room.
There would also be new accommodation available for physio and phlebotomy, as well as further storage space and toilet provision, among other things.
The proposals also incorporate car parking and site works.
Neighbours – which includes residential properties as well as Christ Church and St Joseph’s Primary School – will be written to and notified of the plans.
These proposals will now be advertised shortly with a decision expected in due course.
