Community to mark 70th anniversary of end of World War II

A beacon will be lit in Craigavon and an Act of Remembrance and wreath-laying held in Armagh to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day.

Three days of commemorations have been planned across the UK for Victory in Europe Day, beginning on Friday, May 8.

It marks 70 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe.

Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council has been liaising with the Royal British Legion.

It has agreed to an official ceremony to take place at the Craigavon Civic Centre, which will culminate with the lighting of a beacon.

Invited guests will be welcomed to the Civic Centre by Lord Mayor Darryn Causby and a light supper will be served before proceeding outside, where a tribute, drawn up by the Office of the 70th Anniversary VE Day Beacons, will be read.ve day

It is expected that each bullet point will be read by different representatives of local Legions and veterans.

At 9.30pm the beacon will be lit by the Lord Mayor and the public are invited to come along and watch.

It will be accompanied by the playing of a fanfare.

The lighting of the beacon will coincide with others being lit across the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

The short service of tribute is to those who served during World War Two and in particular those who lost their lives or were injured.

Lord Mayor Causby will then be in Armagh on Sunday, May 10, for an Act of Remembrance and wreath-laying.

It will take place at 3pm at the Cenotaph on the Mall and the Lord Mayor will lay a wreath on behalf of the people of the Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon areas.
