Jail for man who kicked out at police as they tried to arrest him

Defence said: 'This is an unfortunate episode when drink and emotions got the better of him'

A man who kicked out at police as they tried to arrest him has been sentenced to two months in prison.

Court heard that the charges for the 21-year-old’s initial arrest, which related to a domestic incident, were later withdrawn.

Lee Knox, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to two counts of resisting police and two counts of assault on police at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday, where he appeared via videolink from Maghaberry.

It was heard that on May 31, at 7.20pm, the defendant was arrested for matters which were not before the court.

As this was carried out Knox tried to escape, he kicked and punched at officers.

The defendant continued to be aggressive and resist as police attempted to restrain him.

Defence barrister Aaron Thompson stated: “He accepts these offences in interview. The benefit is that the initial charge which was a domestic incident was withdrawn.

“This is an unfortunate episode when drink and emotions got the better of him.”

Knox was sentenced to two months in prison.
