A man who was arrested for disorderly behaviour and a threat to kill following a dispute with his father has been sentenced to three months in custody.

Christopher Hughes, (34), of no-fixed-abode appeared before Craigavon Magistrates’ Court, via videolink from Maghaberry.

He was charged with attempted criminal damage, disorderly behaviour and threats to kill.

The court heard that on January 31 of this year, police were called to an address in Craigavon in relation to another matter. While they were escorting the defendant away from the area, he became aggressive towards police and attempted to damage a police vehicle.

He was then arrested and his behaviour was noted to have continued in a disorderly manner.

Hughes’ defence solicitor, Siun Aine Downey, explained to the court that there had been an argument with the defendant’s father in the house, and that his father had phoned the police and made an allegation against the defendant, which led to “frayed” tempers at the time.

Conveying the defendant’s wish to apologise to the police involved in the incident, the defence said: “He shouldn’t have taken his frustrations out on anyone, but least of all the police.”

Despite conceding that the charges were a “pretty nasty set of offences”, the defence explained that the original charges for which the police were called have since been dropped.

District Judge Bernie Kelly imposed a period of three months in custody on each charge, with the periods of custody to run concurrently with each other.
