Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has officially opened the new Moylinn East pedestrian and cycle bridge in Craigavon.
The new bridge restores a key active travel link for local residents, school pupils and visitors to the area.
The £750,000 bridge replaces the original structure which provided pedestrian access over the A3 Lake Road dual carriageway between Tullygally Roundabout and Lake Roundabout. The previous bridge was removed in March 2023 after inspections deemed it was beyond economic repair.
The new crossing reinstates an important active travel link across the Lake Road between the nearby South Lake Leisure Centre, Craigavon City Park and Rushmere Shopping Centre. It also strengthens a key section of the National Cycling Network and supports the Department’s commitment to delivering high-quality, accessible active travel options.
Welcoming the opening of the bridge, Minister Kimmins said: “I am delighted to open the new Moylinn pedestrian and cycle bridge which replaces the previous bridge and provides the community, visitors and local school children with a superb pedestrian and cycle link across the Lake Road to the Craigavon Lakes and nearby leisure facilities.
“Creating cleaner and greener travel options is one of my department’s seven Foundations for a Better Future, and this bridge demonstrates my ongoing commitment to walking, wheeling and cycling. Schemes such as this provide excellent healthy and environmentally friendly transport choices for people who wish to leave the car behind for some of their shorter local journeys.
“I would like to thank the community for their patience and cooperation whilst the project was completed.”
Alongside the bridge works, upgrades are progressing along the Black Paths network, including sections between St Anthony’s Church and the new bridge, and from South Lakes Leisure Centre to Drumgor Centre, continuing to the Curly Wurly Bridge.
