Work has begun on a £160,000 Shared Space project in Coalisland town centre.
It will see the development of the canal towpath area, including new amphitheatre seating, benches and lighting at the start of the canal.
Pathways will also be upgraded, covered seating will be installed and existing railings and walls will be updated.
The project, which has been funded through the EU’s Peace IV Programme, is the latest improvement scheme in the town and is expected to be complete by the end of July.
Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Paul McLean said the funding is another example of the council’s “commitment and dedication to continue to invest in the revitalisation of the town”.
He said: “The new works will see further enhancement and development of the canal towpath which has already benefitted from £274,000 revitalisation works from the Department for Communities (DfC) and £170,000 Active Travel works from the Department for Infrastructure (DfI).
“Coalisland has also recently benefitted from a very successful £4.27 million public realm scheme which created a safe, high quality and pedestrian-friendly environment and greatly improved traffic flowing and parking around the town.
“The latest works are a welcome addition to the town and particularly to the canal towpath which links many different areas and housing developments to the town centre.
“I wish to thank our funders, the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB), for investing so significantly in the town and for again working in partnership with the council to bring these essential works to fruition.”
Other Shared Space works will be taking place in Cookstown, Dungannon and Magherafelt over the coming months.
