An exciting new glamping site overlooking the scenic Tullynawood Lake at Darkley could prove to be a catalyst for further tourist facilities in the area.
That is the assertion of supporting statements which accompany proposals just submitted to Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council for consideration.
The stunning Tullynawood Lake is a hidden gem.
And now these proposals seek to create glamping facilities to allow visitors to come along and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
An application has been made for a glamping site consisting of four pods. Each would have parking facilities and there would be an open space area – to be used for “various recreational activities” – as well.
Two of the pods would each have a double bed, while the other two would have a double bed and a single bed. Other facilities common to all four are seating/sofa bed, dining area, kitchen, shower room, stove and patio.
The earmarked site – described in the application at present as a field – is given as “approximately 30 metres to the south of 48 Tullynawood Road, Darkley”.
According to a design and access statement, the glamping site is ideal at this location and “will not detract from the existing rural character” of the area.
It states: “The proposed glamping pod site should be viewed as a step in the development of this most scenic part of Armagh to encourage tourism and promote the area for visitors.
“Without this step it may be more difficult for other ventures to get established and prosper.
“For example, the glamping pod site could well be the catalyst for enhancement of the nearby jetty and car park, perhaps with picnic areas, paths/walks, fishing facilities, improved signage, improved access etc.
“While Tullynawood Lake is a local tourist attraction and amenity, it is apparent that access to the lake is limited to the nearby jetty and small car park and few facilities are available to encourage tourists to stay longer in the area.
“The proposed glamping pod site addressed this issue to some degree, enabling the provision of accommodation near to the lake.
“It is clear that the site is suitable for the proposed glamping pods, in that is already has the essential boundaries in place, with sufficient mature planting to screen and carefully integrate the glamping pods into this rural and scenic setting.”
The application will now be publicly advertised with a recommendation in relation to the development then to follow.
