Sinn Féin councillor Roisin Mulgrew has received notification that road improvement works in Camlough village will begin in the coming weeks.
Councillor Mulgrew said: “The road through Camlough village has been in appalling condition for the past two years. My predecessor Turlough Murphy lobbied the Minister Danny Kennedy on this issue on a number of occasions and, while hopes were raised that work would be undertaken quickly, it has taken until now to receive a start date.
“In response to my own queries I am delighted to report that Roads Service have confirmed that work will begin in the last days of this month or early June. The work to be undertaken will include the resurfacing and remarking of the road along with improvements to footpaths, drainage and street lighting.
“All in all the scheme will cost approximately £250,000 and work will last for 11 weeks. Road service is keen to work with local representatives, business people and the whole community to minimise any disruption which this essential work will entail. To this end a meeting of all interested parties will be held in the coming weeks in council offices, anyone who wishes to attend should get in touch with myself or Newry & Mourne District Council.
“I know that people will understand that any disruption is a small price to pay for major improvements to this road which everyone agrees is in a dire state at present.”
