A man discovered on a road in Markethill this morning is believed to have been struck by a vehicle.
The deceased, who lived in the area, has been named locally as David Shields.
Police are continuing to investigate the “sudden death”, which happened in the Shillinghill Road area, on the outskirts of the town.
Detective Inspector Colin Patterson said the deceased had been found lying in the road shortly before 7am this morning.
“We are currently working to establish the circumstances surrounding the death, however, at this stage we believe this may have been as a result of a hit and run RTC.
“I would particularly like to speak to anyone who can help us with our enquiries.
“I would appeal to them to contact police at Armagh on the non-emergency number 101.”
Local Ulster Unionist Assemblyman Danny Kennedy said he was “very concerned” to hear the news, describing it as “a tragic loss”.
SDLP Councillor Sharon Haughey has expressed her shock.
She said: “Details are unclear at the moment but there is no doubt that this is very sad news. My thoughts and prayers are with the man’s family and friends. I am also thinking of the person who came across the body; that is not a sight any of us want to come across, especially so unexpected as this.”
Councillor Haughey added: “I urge local people to be patient as the police and emergency services complete their investigations.”
